Green energy shines for California schools

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 12 (UPI) -- Electricity costs for the San Jose, Calif., school district will decline 30 percent with the help of a 3.7 megawatt solar project, Chevron announced.

Chevron Energy Solutions said the San Jose Unified School District would see its utility costs fall by nearly one-third through the new solar project. This translates to about $36 million in savings over the life of the project, Chevron said.

The carbon-emission reduction realized through the solar facility is equivalent to planting more than 980 acres of trees, the company added. Solar panels at six sites will generate enough energy to power more than 250,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Chevron said it would design, build and monitor the solar energy project for the San Jose school district.

"This project is a prime example of how education institutions can use solar projects to provide budget relief and teach the next generation about clean technologies," said Jim Davis, president of Chevron Energy Solutions.

Chevron anticipates project completion this year.
