RIL announces Bay of Bengal gas find

MUMBAI, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The government of India has been notified of the resource potential in the Bay of Bengal following a series of gas discoveries, Reliance Industries Ltd. said.

RIL announced its third consecutive gas discovery in deepwater exploration blocks located in the Krishna basin roughly 28 miles offshore in the Bay of Bengal. The exploration block covers an area of 1,270 square miles.

The company, India's largest in the private sector, said it encountered three reservoirs of Miocene age with a thickness of 13, 52 and 75 feet.

Well KGV-D3-R1 was drilled to a depth of 13,494 feet in 6,500 feet of water.

RIL said it was in the process of determining the commercial potential of the discovery. The company added it was examining several other prospects in the region.

RIL holds a 90 percent working interest in the well, with Hardy Exploration and Production Inc. holding the remaining stake.
