Four new wind turbines spinning in France

ROUEN, France, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- German utility RWE Innogy opened its Forieres wind farm in Normandy, France, boasting a capacity of at least 22.4 million kilowatt-hours of power per year.

RWE Innogy, the renewable energy arm of RWE, inaugurated its four-wind turbine facility in Normandy on Friday. Apart from the supply of renewable energy, the facility will avoid more than 4,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the company said.

RWE said wind power supplied roughly 5.6 terawatt-hours of electricity to French households at the end of 2008, which is slightly more than 1 percent of the total electricity consumption.

The Forieres wind farm is the German utility giant's third such project in France. There are plans to construct additional facilities in the regions of Pays de la Loire, Normandy and Midi Pyrenees.

France expects to have 25 gigawatts of installed wind power at onshore and offshore facilities by 2020.

The renewables company added that it invested more than $1.25 million in green energy projects in Europe per year, with a focus on wind, water and biomass.
