ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Turkmenistan has built a liquefied natural gas terminal at Kiyanly on the Caspian.
Turkmenistan.ru informatsionnoe agentsvo reported Dec. 9 that the Kiyanly terminal, the first to be built on the Caspian, has an annual throughput capacity of 200,000 tons. The Turkmenbashi oil refineries in Turkmenistan's Turkmenbashi Caspian port will supply the LNG via pipelines to the facility.
Kiyanly represents a major upgrade to Turkmenistan's LNG export facilities, as previously all Turkmen LNG was shipped by railways and roads. Iran's Pars Energy company, which had previously constructed earlier natural gas facilities in Turkmenbashi port, Serakhs and Serkhetabad, constructed the Kiyanly terminal. The total storage capacity of the terminals exceeds 10,500 tons of LNG.
The facilities along with the development of the Naip and Bagaja fields have allowed Turkmenistan to increase its LNG production over the last nine years by more than 1,500 percent to 276,000 tons a year. Further expanding the country's maritime LNG export facilities, this year Turkmenistan purchased two tankers for oil and LNG export.
