Maryland plans massive solar farm

BALTIMORE, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. state of Maryland selected Constellation Energy to develop what will become the third-largest solar facility in the United States, the company said.

Maryland opted to include Constellation Energy in a 15.9-megawatt solar photovoltaic power station as part of a state initiative to develop clean energy.

"This large-scale solar facility will make a significant contribution to our shared goal of a cleaner energy future," said Mayo Shattuck III, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Constellation Energy.

The installation would make up the majority of a 17.1 MW facility slated for construction on 100 acres of land leased from Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg.

The facility will become the largest solar farm in Maryland and the third largest in the United States.

Construction is scheduled for a December 2012 completion date.
