BETHESDA, Md., Dec. 3 (UPI) -- A $5 million investment in clean energy research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology tackles U.S. energy security concerns, Lockheed Martin said.

Lockheed Martin and MIT announced a research partnership to focus on carbon modeling and verification and utility-scale energy storage.

The global security giant said it would invest $5 million during the next five years in the MIT Energy Initiative to target climate change, alternative energy and energy storage technology.

"As a global security company, we recognize the economic and strategic challenges posed by a dependence on foreign oil, the potential destabilizing effect of global climate change, and the vulnerability of our nation's aging power grid," said Ray Johnson, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Lockheed Martin.

The MIT Energy Initiative works on research projects to advance energy science and technology. Lockheed Martin, for its part, said it was moving to address energy and climate challenges with its customer base.
