HOUSTON, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Russian astronauts have begun a spacewalk to install high fidelity cameras aboard the Russian section of the International Space Station, which will send back real-time images of Earth.
Commander Oleg Kotov and Flight Engineer Sergey Ryazanskiy began their spacewalk at 9 a.m. EST from the Earth-facing Pirs Docking Compartment and are equipped with cameras in their helmets.
The six-hour spacewalk to install the cameras will be streamed by NASA and UrtheCast, the Canadian company involved in the project. The astronauts will also be wearing GoPro cameras on their forearms to provide additional images.
UrtheCast says that once installed, the cameras will provide the first high definition online stream of the Earth in color. The cameras were installed and removed during an earlier spacewalk held on December 27 last year, after Russian flight controllers were unable to retrieve data from the cameras
