MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 22 (UPI) -- The Mozilla Foundation, despite the success of Firefox, says it's not limiting itself to the open-source browser as its entry into the high-tech arena.
David Ascher, chief executive officer of the non-profit organization, outlined a few of Mozilla's upcoming plans Tuesday, Cnet.com reported.
Mozilla and the Web have reached a critical turning point, he said, because, "[t]he browser isn't the only strategic front in the struggle to promote and maintain people's sovereignty over their online lives."
Ascher talked about some of Mozilla's projects under way.
One is Boot2Gecko that could result in a kind of 'Firefox OS' for smartphones. Then there's BrowserID, intended to provide a safer and more alternative to Facebook Connect and Google account login procedures.
Finally, a Mozilla-powered Apps initiative has the goal of utilizing Web technologies to create apps that work across all platforms.
Mozilla has a unique position beyond its success with Firefox development, analysts say, as the only major software development non-profit with popular name recognition and the only one with a stated interest in user privacy.
