Some OneTouch glucose test strips recalled

WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says eight lots of OneTouch SureStep glucose test strips have been recalled because they may give false readings.

The FDA said the manufacturer, LifeScan Inc. of Milpitas, Calif., initiated the voluntary recall because the test strips might provide falsely low glucose results when the glucose level is higher than 400 mg/dL.

"If patients use the falsely low test results to determine their insulin dose, they may give themselves too little insulin, which could result in poor blood glucose control," the FDA said. "High blood glucose must be recognized and treated promptly to avoid serious complications, such as coma and death."

The eight lots of OneTouch and SureStep Test Strips being recalled were distributed nationwide between Aug. 1, 2009, and Jan. 28. The recalled lot numbers are 2969251, 2969795, 2969798, 2982566, 2982369, 2969481, 2983467 and 2998193.

LifeScan officials estimate approximately 14,000 packages (50- and 100-count) of the test strips are involved in the recall.
