Malaysia seeks Indonesia's help in fires

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- The Malaysian government said it wants Indonesia to prosecute Malaysian companies involved in forest fires causing the region's heavy smog.

A Malaysian official said companies engaged in illegal logging and oil palm cultivation should be prosecuted under Indonesian laws, the Bernama News Agency said Saturday. If the companies are charged and brought to trial under Indonesian laws, Malaysia would support the actions, he said.

Indonesia has not said Malaysian companies are responsible for the fires, Bernama said.

Environmental officials from the region met in Indonesia at the Asean Environment Ministers Special Meeting on Regional Haze to address the haze problem that has affected Southeast Asia recently.
