HPV infections steady with age in gay men

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers said they have found "a high prevalence of anal human papillomavirus infection in all age groups of men who have sex with men."

University of California, San Francisco, researchers studied 1,218 men who have sex with men living in Boston, Denver, New York, and San Francisco. The men were aged 18 to 89 years and were 78 percent white, 14 percent Latino, 6 percent African American and 3 percent Asian.

They found the anal HPV infection in 57 percent of the study subjects -- a rate that did not change with age or from city to city.

The study was conducted between January 2001 and October 2002.

Factors associated with infection were receptive anal sex and having more than five sex partners in the previous six months, the researchers said.
