Better to resuscitate newborns with air

MELBOURNE, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Australian doctors believe they have made a breakthrough that could save thousands of babies' lives worldwide, the Melbourne Sun reported Saturday.

Dr. Peter Davis of the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne said his research team found that newborns should be resuscitated with air, not pure oxygen.

Doctors discovered one death would be prevented for every 20 babies resuscitated with air rather than oxygen.

The study published in the Lancet may overturn medical practice worldwide.

Thousands of Australian babies a year need resuscitation in the first moments of life before they are able to take their first breath alone.
