Patient receives 3 transplants at once

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- A patient in China has received a successful simultaneous liver, pancreas and kidney transplant, thought to be the first in Asia.

Experts have said it is difficult to transplant more than two organs at the same time, Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency, reported Sunday.

The patient, surnamed Lin, contracted diabetes when he was 14. Ten years later, he suffered from hepatitis A and then from hepatitis B. His insulin injections and medication led to chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver. In June this year, Lin's condition worsened and was unable to eat.

Hospital sources said Lin has been stable condition since the operation.
