SEOUL, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Footprints of a Paleolithic man, the first to be found in Asia, dating back 50,000 years, were discovered on a South Korean island, authorities announced.
Officials from the South Korean Cultural Properties Administration said the footprints and fossilized animal tracks were discovered on Cheju Island, the Korea Times reported Saturday.
The discovery included more than 100 footprints of ancient man and thousands of horse, elephant, bird and deer fossil tracks found on the southern island province of Cheju and along the shores of the island's Andok-myon.
The fossils were discovered by Professor Kim Jung-yul of the Korean National University of Education in October.
Footprints of Paleothic man are a rare find, and have been discovered in only six other countries: Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Chile, France and Italy.
