Atom-thin silicon films for supercomputers

TORONTO, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Atomically thin layers of crystalline silicon called "quantum wells" may help lead to hand-held supercomputers in the future. Scientists predict quantum wells will prove key to many future devices, such as a light-speed fast Internet that use lasers and fiber optics to transmit data instead of electrical pulses and metal wires.
