New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's pizza fork sold for $2,500

NEW YORK, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- The cutlery that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio utilized during his “Pizzagate” scandal was used to fork over some money to charity after an online auction on Friday.

De Blasio was criticized for using a fork and a knife to eat a slice at Goodfellas Pizzeria in Staten Island last month. On Friday, it was sold for $2,500 and the money will go to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Goodfella's Pizzeria co-owner Marc Cosentino put the fork on the auction block after it made headlines. "It's a good cause, and it's a nice piece of New York history to have," Cosentino told DNAinfo New York.

After de Blasio used the fork on his pizza, Cosentino stashed the utensil in an evidence bag and put it on display. Cosentino is a retired NYPD sergeant.

The winning bidder donated the fork back to the foundation after it was purchased.

"I just did it because I thought it was funny," Cosentino said. "Then all of a sudden it got all this interest, so I thought let's do something, let's do something for charity."

The money will be used to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy and wounded soldiers.

"So long as people are eating pizza, doesn't matter how they eat it," Cosentino said.
