Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles man said a hunger for burgers led him to win $2 million from a scratch-off California Lottery game.

Kevin Smith said he was making a trip to Burger King when he decided to stop at a nearby Food 4 Less store to buy a lottery ticket.

"I didn't feel like cooking," Smith said. "I went to go buy my grandfather and myself some dinner."

Smith said he decided to scratch off his ticket before leaving the parking lot.

"As I was playing I was thinking to myself, 'A lot of words are starting to pop up now,'"

Smith ended up uncovering a total 10 words on the Crossword Deluxe Scratchers ticket, winning him the $2 million top prize.

"I went to Burger King and I got crowned the King!" he joked.

Smith said he went straight home to call his mother, who was in disbelief when he told her about the ticket.

"I said, 'What?' And he said $2 million!" Alexis Smith said of her conversation with her son. "I said, 'Boy, you better lock that away in a safe!'"
