June 13 (UPI) -- A Danish festival gathered 44 artists to transform more than 13,000 tons of sand into massive and intricately detailed sculptures with an "under the sea" theme.

A video posted to YouTube and recorded at the Sondervig Sand Sculpture Festival, which is now in its 15th year, shows some of the enormous sand sculptures created by the 44 artists behind this year's exhibition, which began late last month.

Organizers said they trucked in more than 13,000 tons of sand for this year's event, which features a "Life Under the Sea" theme.

"This year's theme provides insight into the wild and impressive world of marine animals, immersing both children and adults in a spectacle full of life and adventure," organizers wrote on the festival's website.
