Beer brewed from baseball bats to be served at Atlanta Braves' stadium

April 11 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Braves new stadium will open with an exclusive beer from a local brewery, aged using baseball bats.

Georgia-based Terrapin Beer Company will offer four ballpark exclusive beers as the Braves play their first official game at the new SunTrust Park including the Chopsecutioner Bat Wood Aged IPA a version of the brewery's Hopsecutioner aged on Mizuno baseball bat chips.

"We brew the Chopsecutioner and after the fermentation we transfer the beer onto the wood chips and then cool the beer down and age it," Brewmaster Brian Buckowski told CBS Sports. "There's some waste from bats from when they spin them down or carve them down and that's the product that we use to age the beer. The wood chips from them making the bats and that's what we use."

The beer's label features the brewery's terrapin mascot dressed in a Braves uniform while using a tomahawk to swing at hops.

Buckowski said beers are aged on a variety of materials ranging from wood chips to honeycombs.

"You can actually age something on wood chips or spirals or honeycombs," he said. "You can also age beer in bourbon barrels, wine barrels and extract beers like that."

He added the special beer is lighter than the brewery's traditional Hopsecutioner, making it more enjoyable to drink at the ball park.

"When I'm sitting in the hot sun watching a baseball game, 7.3 percent alcohol beer is pretty tough, especially if you have a couple," Buckowski said.
