The reports eventually reached the singer's mother, Sonia Yelich-O'Connor, who tweeted that she and her daughter were in London at the time of the performance.
Lorde also responded to the situation by sharing a photo of herself eating a creme egg with the caption "We in London" and calling the reports that she performed at the event "fake news" and "quite cute."
Event organizer Craig Neilson told the Guardian he thought attendees would realize the performer on stage was actually Lorde impersonator and Auckland University music student Hannah Horsfield, but said "nearly everyone went away convinced that it was the real deal."
"I really expected that people would be leaving the hall a bit uncertain, but I guess I really shouldn't have underestimated Hannah."
He told Newshub that Horsfield's performance was so convincing that the crowd erupted in applause after the performance that was meant to be an early April Fools' Day prank.
"It was an early celebration of what happens on Saturday," he said. "We thought there'd be more doubt in people's minds when they left, but there was no doubt because our performer was so incredible."
