Tech vlogger drops iPhone 7 from 'the edge of space' -- 100,000 feet

SACRAMENTO, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- A California tech vlogger used a weather balloon top launch an iPhone to the "edge of space" to test what would happen if it fell.

Sacramento-based vlogger TechRax posted a video to YouTube showing the brand-new iPhone 7 being launched in a weather balloon to an altitude of more than 100,000 feet -- a dizzying height but not quite the "edge of space" advertised by TechRax.

"There ended up being a massive jet stream from launch site so the iPhone traveled approx. 3 hours away and it took us another 3 hours to hike onto unknown mountains to retrieve this thing," TechRax wrote in the video's description.

The video shows the phone being recovered and turned back on -- showing it evaded damage other than a few scratches. The vlogger said he does not know why the phone shut itself off during the flight and failed to record the crash landing.
