'World's only jetpack' circles Statue of Liberty in New York

NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The Australian entrepreneur behind "the world's only real jetpack" showed off his device by taking a flight around the Statue of Liberty in New York.

David Mayman and his Jetpack Aviation team, who posted video of the stunt to YouTube, showed off the JB-9 Jetpack with a flight around the New York landmark on the Hudson River Nov. 3.

The team described their device, which is powered by scaled-down airplane engines, as the "world's only jetpack," a description that relies on their definition of the term.

"As far as we're concerned, a jetpack is something that you can take off and land from vertically," Mayman told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.'s Hack podcast. "So if you can imagine walking out your front door and being able to take off from your porch."

Mayman's jetpack contrasts with those worn by the Swiss Jetman team, Yves Rossy and Vince Reffet. The pair, whose jetpacks are composed of a strap-on wing powered by small jet turbine engines, appeared in a video last week flying in formation with an Emirates Airbus A380 over Dubai.
