Burger King manager finds $100,000 cash in left-behind backpack

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A Burger King employee discovered a backpack Wednesday that had been left behind at a booth -- and it was filled with $100,000 cash.

A worker at the fast food store in San Jose brought the blue backpack to assistant manager Altaf Chaus. The bag had been left at a booth for hours, and when Chaus looked inside for some sort of contact information, he discovered ten stacks of $10,000 -- equaling $100,000.

"I was shocked," he told NBC. "There was a stack of hundred dollar bills wrapped in rubber bands. I called police."

Later that evening police retrieved the bag, which also contained a bank deposit slip, an ATM card, phone numbers, candy, marijuana and a "white rock" that may have been drugs, according to Chaus.

San Jose Police Sgt. Heather Randol told NBC there weren't many leads related to the owner's identity.

Officers told the assistant manager that by law the cash was his if nobody claimed it in a six-month period. Should that be the case, Chaus said, he would "donate the money to needy people."

Last month, a California Highway Patrol officer was praised for returning to its rightful owner $120,000 found on a roadside.
