Teachers abandon Zambia school due to 'witchcraft'

Teachers are fleeing the Kakwelesa Basic School in Zambia due to "mysterious" events blamed on witchcraft, officials said.

KAPIRI MPOSHI, Zambia, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Officials in Zambia said teachers are abandoning their posts at a school due to "mysterious" goings-on attributed to witchcraft.

Beatrice Sikazwe, district commissioner for Kapiri Mposhi, said an unspecified number of teachers and their families left the Kakwelesa Basic School Thursday due to ongoing concerns about witchcraft at the facility.

"They have complained that they are experiencing mysterious things and are not sleeping in peace because of witchcraft," Sikazwe told the Zambia Daily Mail.

Sikazwe said health workers in the area have also been threatening to abandon their posts due to allegations of witchcraft.
