JUIST, Germany, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Germany's Deutsche Post announced it will begin using drones to deliver pharmaceuticals to a North Sea island.

Jurgen Gerdes, director of post, eCommerce and parcels at Deutsche Post, said the drones will travel 7 1/2 miles each way to transport medicines from the Seehund Pharmacy in Norddeich to the island of Juist, which boasts a population of less than 2,000.

Gerdes said each flight will be supervised by a mobile control station, which will have human operators on hand to take over control of the drone if something goes wrong.

"Our DHL Paketkopter 2.0 is one of the safest and most reliable flight systems in its class," Gerdes said. "This is the first time an unmanned drone will do a transport job in the real world out of sight of a pilot."

The German Transport Ministry and German Flight Safety have designed a special zone where the drone will be able to operate on the route between Norddeich and Juist, as well as the Wattenmeer National Park.

Deutsche Post said it currently has no plans to introduce drone services elsewhere in the country.
