DAVIE, Fla., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A group of Florida emergency responders and utility workers spent four hours rescuing a Pomeranian puppy who fell into an open pipe.

Simone Walker of Davie said she had never seen the open pipe in her yard before until her 2-month-old Pomeranian puppy, Sugar, fell in around 2 p.m. Monday, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Tuesday.

Walker called authorities and a group of Davie firefighters, Davie police officers and Sunrise utility workers responded to find to way to get the puppy out of the 6-inch diameter pipe, which leads 3 feet straight down before turning at a right angle to join a water and sewage drain.

"We heard some sounds so we feel the puppy is still alive," Battalion Chief Jorge Gonzalez said. "We are blowing air [into the pipe] just to keep the atmosphere clear so the puppy is able to breathe."

The team used a backhoe to dig out the pipe, but Sugar could not be found. Utility workers were eventually able to find the Pomeranian using a remote-controlled camera cable lowered into the drainage system.

Sunrise water distribution supervisor was able to climb into the drain and lift the puppy out through a manhole.
