Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe A 12-year-old boy from Zhengzhou in China's Henan province required eye surgery after his teacher allegedly ordered his classmates to slap him in the face for neglecting to do his homework. The teacher also allegedly said that the student who dished out the loudest slap would be rewarded with a prize. The boy was reportedly struck some 40 times. Advertisement The boy’s name has not been released. “After being slapped, the teacher then made me do push-ups and did not allow me to eat lunch,” he said. “Later that night I found out that I couldn’t see properly from my left eye.” The teacher who ordered the slap-attack apparently believes that physically punishing children in the classroom helps improve their progress. “I didn’t know the damage was so severe,” the boy’s mother said. “The doctor had told me my child’s eye might not be cured.” The family was awarded about $5,000 in compensation. “The school has given us 30,000 yuan as compensation, but after one surgery had to be done we’ve already spent it all,” the mother said.
