NANTES, France, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- An auction for objects belonging to the late French musician Serge Gainsbourg garnered about $47,000, but his cigarette butts failed to sell.

The memorabilia sold Thursday by auctioneer Virginie Bertrand in Nantes, France, included a cassette tape of Gainsbourg playing the piano, a gold bracelet the musician was wearing at the time of his 1991 death, a telegram he sent to girlfriend Jane Birkin, a lithograph portrait and a picture of Gainsbourg as a child, Radio France Internationale reported Friday.

However, Bertrand said some items failed to attract bidders, including the butts of four cigarettes Gainsbourg smoked and a dictaphone cassette of Gainsbourg performing the song "Unknown Producer," which was never released.

Bertrand said the auction netted about $47,000.
