MILTON, W.Va., Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Two men who rescued a cat from a burning building in West Virginia while dressed as Batman and Captain America said they were in costume for a nearby event.

John Buckland, who was dressed as Batman, and Troy Marcum, who was dressed as Captain America, said they were attending an event Saturday at the American Legion Post in Milton when they saw smoke and discovered a nearby house was on fire, WCHS-TV, Charleston, W.Va., reported Monday.

Buckland, a former firefighter who served in the role while in the U.S. military in Iraq, said he and Marcum were attempting to find out if anyone was trapped inside the burning building when they found the cat.

Buckland said he and Marcum had been teaching positive lessons to children as part of his Heroes for Hire business. However, he said he does not think the cat rescue makes him a hero.

"I just wonder what the cat was thinking," Buckland said. "I'm glad no one was inside."
