London skyscraper glare blamed for melting car parts

LONDON, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The developers of London's new Walkie Talkie skyscraper said nearby parking lots have been closed to due concerns about the building's glare melting objects.

The joint developers, Land Securities and Canary Wharf, said city officials agreed to close three nearby parking lots pending an investigation into whether the intense glare from the building was behind damage to vehicles parked nearby the structure, The Telegraph reported Monday.

"We are aware of concerns regarding the light reflecting from 20 Fenchurch Street and are looking into the matter," the developers said in a statement. "As a precautionary measure, the City of London has agreed to suspend three parking bays in the area which may be affected while we investigate the situation further."

The 37-story building was dubbed the Walkie Talkie due to its shape resembling its namesake. Construction is due to be completed next May.

Martin Lindsay, who parked his Jaguar XJ in a lot next to the building Thursday, said the glare caused bodywork panels on the vehicle to warp and become damaged.

"They're going to have to think of something. I'm gutted. How can they let this continue?" he said.
