GAVLE, Sweden, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- A pair of thieves found their getaway ruined when their pilfered Ben & Jerry's ice cream melted, police in Gavle, Sweden, said.

Gavle police said the two men grabbed $1,380 worth of ice cream from a truck parked outside a wholesale center Tuesday morning and fled when they were pursued by a security guard, The Local.se reported Thursday.

The ice cream started to melt during the attempted getaway and the men abandoned their ill-gotten desserts, police said.

The security guard was eventually able to catch one of the men, an 18-year-old whose name was not released.

Police said they are searching for the second suspect.

"As I understand it, all the ice cream was still [in the bags]. And a lot of it had melted so it had to be thrown away," police spokesman Mikael Hedstrom told the Aftonbladet newspaper. "This is one of the most unusual crimes I've been involved in."
