CALGARY, Alberta, June 3 (UPI) -- Police in Alberta said they called off a homicide investigation when a potential snuff film found in a landfill turned out to be from a Dan Aykroyd movie.

Calgary police spokesman Kevin Brookwell said the film strip was found in a landfill and was turned over to police when the person who made the discovery found it contained footage of a man holding a knife while standing over an apparent dead body, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

"This potentially looks like it could be a homicide, or someone capturing a homicide, or one of these snuff films," Brookwell said.

However, the investigation lasted for only a single day before police recognized the knife-wielding man as actor Dan Aykroyd. Officers used Google and discovered the footage was from the 1990 film "Loose Cannons."

Aykroyd was contacted about the incident by website TMZ.

"The movie should have been left in the landfill where it belongs," the actor quipped.
