Bears, mountain lion seen in LA suburb

MONROVIA, Calif., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Residents of Monrovia, Calif., say two bears and a mountain lion have been spotted roaming the area.

Residents said two large brown bears, which experts said may have been a mother and a cub, were spotted wandering the suburb northeast of Los Angeles and are believed to have been behind a few knocked-over trash cans, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported Monday.

A large mountain lion was seen in the area a short time after the bear sightings, locals said.

Authorities said all three of the animals returned to the wilderness a short time after being spotted.

Monrovia is in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

JFK's bomber jacket sells for $629,000

AMESBURY, Mass., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts auction house said President John F. Kennedy's Air Force One bomber jacket exceeded expectations by selling for $629,000.

John McInnis Auctioneers said the jacket, which bears a patch with the presidential seal, was expected to sell for $20,000 to $40,000 at Sunday's auction, but it instead sold for $629,000, including the 18 percent buyer's premium, CNN reported Monday.

The jacket was part of a cache of items found by the family of David Powers, a close friend and special assistant to Kennedy. The items auctioned Sunday also included Kennedy family photographs from the 1930s, working copies of a foreign policy speech, signed letters from the president to his parents and a 1963 birthday card to Kennedy signed by his then-toddler son, John Jr.

Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas Nov. 22, 1963. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his death.

Ball of light spotted over Florida

MIAMI, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Residents of two Florida counties said they spotted a meteor-like ball of light in the sky shortly after sunset.

Locals in Broward and Miami-Dade counties said the ball of light Sunday night was burning brightly and moving quickly through the sky, The Miami Herald reported Monday.

"Looking over the Biscayne Bay from downtown, I saw an object falling from the sky," Miami resident Brad Greenberg posted to Twitter around 6:30 p.m. "At first, the object was faintly glowing and moving fast but not nearly as fast as a shooting star."

The Broward Sheriff's Office said it received several calls Sunday night about "lights in the sky."

Jockey keeps leg after thrown from horse

WAIROA, New Zealand, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A New Zealand jockey whose leg was broken so badly his bone was poking out of his skin on Valentine's Day said it was his second bad experience on the holiday.

Cameron Lammas, 28, said both the tibia and fibula in his right leg were broken when he was flung from a horse at the starting gates in Wairoa, The Dominion Post, Wellington, New Zealand, reported Monday.

Lammas, whose leg was nearly amputated before doctors were able to straighten the bones in two surgeries, insisted on taking before-and-after pictures of the injury.

"I'm a bit gruesome like that," he said.

Lammas said Valentine's Day might be unlucky for him, as last year his partner, Tracey Parnwell, had to resuscitate him when his heart stopped following a kick to the chest from a horse.

"I fainted and turned blue so she decided she'd better do CPR," Lammas said. "It's good excuse to get out of it. Next Valentine's Day I might go pig hunting instead."
