Nudists reach out to younger crowd

LOXAHATCHEE, Fla., Aug. 11 (UPI) -- The End of Summer Naked Bash, which has become an annual ritual for some Florida nudists, is aimed at drawing a younger crowd to the practice.

This year's event, the fourth annual one, is being held this weekend at Sunsport Gardens, a 40-acre nudist resort in Loxahatchee, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported. The event's target audience is people 18 to 30 who like to bare it all.

"Young people don't want to go to bingo night or play shuffleboard," in the nude, said Robbe White, founder of the Florida Young Naturist organization. "There's a lot of desire for resorts to attract young people, but they don't do anything to attract them."

Morley Schloss, the biggest shareholder in Sunsport Gardens, may be 71 now, but he was only 28 when he discovered the joys of taking it all off. That was at the Woodstock Festival, the legendary rock gathering in upstate New York in 1969.

"It was kind of scary at first," Schloss said. "Then, I felt the sun all over my skin and I said, 'Wow, this is fantastic.'"

Schloss's efforts to attract the young people of today include discounts for those new to naturism, 24-hour access to the hot tub and swimming pool and drum circles and rock bands, the newspaper said.

Unique dime sells for $1.84M

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- A unique dime minted in 1873 in Carson City, Nev., sold at auction in Philadelphia for considerably more than its face value -- $1.84 million.

The "No Arrows" dime went to an anonymous buyer in the auction at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, KYW News Radio reported.

It was described as the world's most valuable dime.

Coin Update News said the dime was probably sent to Philadelphia for assay and was supposed to be melted down along with others in the series because the weight of silver in dimes had been slightly increased. But someone presumably took it home for a souvenir and it resurfaced decades later in a private collection.

The dime's most recent home was in the Battle Born collection at the World's Fair of Money. The Battle Born collection included a sample of every coin minted in Carson City until the operation was shut down in 1893.

French vineyard declared historic

SARRAGACHIES, France, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- The French government has declared a 190-year-old vineyard, which has seven grape varieties not grown elsewhere, a historic monument.

The Pedebernade vineyard in the village of Sarragachies in southwest France is the first living thing classified as a historic monument, Britain's The Daily Telegraph reported Sunday.

The Pedebernade family believes the vines to be at least 190 years old, meaning they are among the few to survive the phylloxera disease, which wiped out most French vineyards in the late 19th century. Their survival is thought to be because of the sandiness of the soil, preventing the disease from attacking the roots.

Olivier Bourdet-Pees, head of Plaimont wine cooperative, which campaigned for the designation, said this type of listing used to be restricted to stones.

"It's quite simply an exceptional site. It's not just the age of the vines, but also the extraordinary number of grape varieties. Above all there are seven grapes that are completely unknown and exist nowhere else on the planet. They have completely disappeared. We don't even know their names," he said.

Eight generations of the Pedebernade family have tended the 600 plants in a small plot, but because of the 20 variety of grapes, no wine is made from the harvest, the Telegraph reported. They are sent to a local wine cooperative where they are blended with grapes from other vineyards.

Fla. teen say he couldn't help but pinch

NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- A Florida teenager told police he couldn't help himself when he allegedly groped a woman while shopping at Walmart.

Aaron Morris, 18, North Lauderdale, allegedly told officers following his arrest Thursday he could not help reaching out and touching the woman's bottom as she shopped.

"Her booty looked so good, I just couldn't resist touching it," Morris said in a report filed by Broward County sheriff's deputies.

Morris was picked up a short time later at a gas station when the woman pointed him out to deputies. He was jailed on a battery charge, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
