SALT LAKE CITY, July 19 (UPI) -- The Utah Highway Patrol said a trooper helped a couple with the birth of their twin daughters at the side of the freeway.

Sgt. Cade Brenchley said he received a call around 8 a.m. Tuesday to assist a Wendover woman giving birth at the side of Interstate 80, about 24 miles from the Nevada border, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Thursday.

Brenchley said he arrived to find one child had already been born and a second was on the way.

The officer, who said he had previously assisted with the births of two of his own children, praised the mother for her bravery.

"She was a real trooper, for a lack of a better term," he said.

The babies were airlifted to Salt Lake hospital and the mother was taken to the same facility via ambulance, as there was not enough room in the helicopter.
