Jules Fiani, a Howell-area attorney, said he found the envelope containing the cash at the Hartland Township Dairy Queen on Mother's Day and the Livingston County Sheriff's Department recently informed him the money has gone unclaimed, the Livingston Daily Press and Argus reported Monday.
Fiani said he picked up the money from the sheriff's department and "it's all going to charitable organizations."
He said the non-profits benefiting from the cash include the sheriff's department's Shop With a Cop program, which pairs police officers with underprivileged children to shop for Christmas gifts, as well as Make-A-Wish and Gleaners Community Food Bank.
"It's found money and it's the right thing to do," Fiani said. "I wish I had more to give away."
Sheriff Bob Bezotte applauded Fiani's generosity.
"I think it's an honorable thing to do; it's nice to help kids when you can," Bezotte said. "It's a perfect time to do that."
