LOUIS, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- An 88-year-old widower and an 87-year-old former nun who met as neighbors at a Missouri retirement center said they are planning a September wedding. Gene Schmidt, who had been married for 56 years before his wife died of cancer, and Elizabeth Tucker, a former nun, said they met at the Our Lady of Life Retirement Center in St. Louis, but neither of them had expected to find love, KPLR-TV, St. Louis, reported Wednesday. Advertisement "When I left the convent and never had an inclination to, I never met anyone that I respected enough to marry them," Tucker said. However, Tucker had a change of heart after suffering a stroke in December. "Within a month or two of having the stroke I was walking her out and she told me she was in love and she was going to marry me. I thought, she's had a stroke and she was going to marry me. I thought, she'll get over it and say, My God what did I do?" Schmidt said. Schmidt said he was delighted when Tucker made a full recovery and told him she had not changed her mind. The couple said they are planning a September wedding and they will move in together after the ceremony. Advertisement "The day after I'll be 89. I wanted to get married before I got old," Schmidt said.
