BOSSIER, La., July 25 (UPI) -- A Bossier, La., homeowners association is suing a couple in an attempt to force them to remove a sign supporting their son's military service from their yard.

The Gardens of Southgate's suit, filed this month, claims the multi-colored sign Timothy and Jodi Burr have in their yard proclaiming "Our son defends our freedom" violates subdivision covenant restrictions on signage, the Shreveport Times reported Saturday.

The Burrs officially responded to the suit this week referencing two main points: the association has given up on covenant sign restrictions by not fully enforcing them and forcing the Burrs to remove their sign violates their freedom of expression.

"This is a restriction of our First Amendment rights," Jodi Burr said.

The association has been sending the Burrs violation notices since February, asking them to take down the sign, however, whenever the Burrs requested to meet in person, they were met with no response.

"I hate that it's coming to this," she said. "I had hoped with the former ugliness that we were done, but unfortunately, we're not, and we're going to continue to push on."
