GREENWICH, Conn., June 1 (UPI) -- Emergency responders in Connecticut say a baby was born on a stretch of highway over a river when his parents couldn't make it to the hospital in time.

Charlee Tufts, executive director of the Greenwich Emergency Medical Service, said a man called authorities about 9:45 a.m. Monday and said his wife was giving birth on the southbound side of Interstate 95, between Exits 5 and 4 over the Mianus River, the Greenwich Time reported Tuesday.

A team of paramedics, including Greenwich Selectman Drew Marzullo, responded to the scene and found the 8-pound, 5-ounce boy had already been born.

The mother and baby were taken to Greenwich Hospital, where Tufts said they were both doing fine.

"These are happy events, and I'm glad that we could assist and transport the baby to the hospital," Tufts said.
