VICTORIA, British Columbia, May 10 (UPI) -- Animal authorities in British Columbia said a found cat was reunited with its owner thanks to workers who thought to use Facebook.

Ian Fraser of Victoria Animal Control Services said the cat, named Belle, was found living under a deck and its microchip said it had been adopted in Montreal, Postmedia News reported Monday.

"They had records of who they adopted the cat to. They gave us the name and we made a phone call, but the number was out of service," Fraser said.

Fraser said a staff member recommended using Facebook and contact was made with someone who had a matching name. He said the owner had recently moved to Victoria from Montreal.

"It was great that one of my staff had the smarts to do the Facebook search," Fraser said. "It just shows you what ends we'll go to try to locate someone and reunite them with their animal."

Fraser said the cat was reunited with its owner Friday.
