BURR RIDGE, Ill., March 16 (UPI) -- A lavish Illinois house once listed for $25 million has been declared unsafe after burst pipes flooded the home with an estimated 6 million gallons of water.

Burr Ridge Community Development Director Doug Pollock said a real estate agent discovered the flood at the mansion, known locally as "Villa Taj," on March 5 and public works crews estimated the pipes had burst about three weeks earlier, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

Pollock said the home, which the village has labeled "an unsafe building," sustained extensive damage to the first floor and basement.

"It's apparent on all three levels that at least half of each level would have to be stripped down to the studs," Pollock said.

The unoccupied 45,000-square-foot mansion was completed in 2009 and was initially listed at $25 million before eventually being reduced in price to $13 million.

"We're trying to stay in contact with the real estate broker and asking them to make sure that something gets done quickly," Pollock said.
