The publisher said the list, created from user look-ups at Merriam-Webster.com, was topped by "austerity," defined as "enforced or extreme economy." Advertisement "Austerity clearly resonates with many people," said Peter Sokolowski, editor at large for Merriam-Webster. "We often hear it used in the context of government measures, but we also apply it to our own personal finances and what is sometimes called the new normal." The list also included "pragmatic," "moratorium," "socialism," "bigot," "doppelganger," "shellacking," "ebullient," "dissident" and "furtive."
