NEW YORK, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- New York businesses located near construction for the Second Avenue Subway said they are being overrun by flies.

The business owners blamed construction workers who don't clean up after themselves and the small spaces they are forced to use to store their own garbage, the New York Post reported Monday.

The businesses said the insects are also attracted by the muck being dug up by the tunnel boring machine.

"My extermination bill is up three times [over] last year," said Frank Durso, the owner of a Key Food supermarket. "And business is down, so it hurts even more."

Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials denied the flies were brought to the area by construction.

"While we are cognizant of issues that businesses along Second Avenue are facing as a result of construction, flies is not one of them," spokesman Kevin Ortiz said. "There is no connection between flies and construction work."

The business owners said they previously had problems with blocked entrances, limited parking, noise and rats as a result of the construction.
