Fake grenade sparks school evacuation

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Police in Philadelphia said a charter school was evacuated Wednesday morning when a grenade, later found to be fake, was discovered in front of the building.

Investigators said the Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School was evacuated Wednesday after a student brought the fake grenade to school and left it out front, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Wednesday.

The police bomb squad was called in and determined the item was a fake, the newspaper said. Officers said the all-clear was sounded and the school was reopened at about 9 a.m.

Police said they were questioning the student who brought the faux-explosive to school, but it was unclear whether any charges would be filed.
