REXBURG, Idaho, July 21 (UPI) -- Police in Idaho said they prevented a group of at least 100 students from participating in a water fight due to safety and protection of property concerns.

Rexburg police showed up at Smith Park, the planned site of the water balloon fight between students from Brigham Young University-Idaho, and turned away arriving participants, telling them they would be charged with misdemeanors if they refused to disperse, KIDK-TV, Idaho Falls, Idaho, reported Wednesday.

"We shut them down, because that is not what the parks are for ... If an individual is hurt from a water balloon, there could be criminal charges filed, and I'm sure there would have been if this would have taken place and somebody was injured," police Capt. Randy Lewis said.

Police said the students had not obtained a public gathering permit from the city and could not have more than 25 people gathered at the park.

Officials said they decided not to allow the balloon fight because of concerns about safety and potential property damage.
