BRADENTON, Fla., June 25 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said a man who spent $300 on booze and strippers concocted a tale of a robbery so his wife wouldn't find out.

Investigators in Manatee County said the 27-year-old out-of-towner from Winter Park, Fla., flagged down a police officer early Thursday and said he had been robbed at gunpoint about 90 minutes previously, the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald Tribune reported Friday.

Police said they became skeptical of the man's story because he waited 90 minutes to report the crime and there were several inconsistencies when he repeated the tale.

The man eventually admitted to officers that he had spent $300, more than half his paycheck, the previous night at the Peek-A-Boo Lounge strip club in Manatee County. He told officers he and his wife share a bank account for bills and groceries.

"And that's why he needed this robbery report," Manatee Sheriff's Sgt. Will Kelley said.
