LONDON, April 21 (UPI) -- An aide to Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, apparently left debate notes and instructions in the back of a London taxi.

The driver turned the book over to The Sun, one of Britain's tabloid newspapers.

"It's very sloppy to say the least and I thought people should know. That's why I've handed it to The Sun," the driver said. "The guy was on the phone during the journey and I think he was talking to Nick Clegg. He kept telling him how well he had done in the debate. He was quite theatrical in the way he spoke."

Most pundits declared Clegg the winner of last week's debate, the first of three. U.S.-style televised debates between party leaders are a new thing in British politics.

The instructions were put together by John Sharkey, a former advertising executive turned Clegg adviser, the Sun said. Sharkey urges Clegg to copy Conservative David Cameron's emphasis on "values," to talk more slowly, give short answers, avoiding a "discursive tour" of any issue and to try to appear "normal."

A Clegg spokeswoman had one thing to say to the Sun: "It is private property and we'd like it back, please."
