MESQUITE, Texas, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- A Texas school board said a 4-year-old removed from his pre-kindergarten class for his long hair can return to class if his locks are braided.

The Mesquite school board said Taylor Pugh, 4, who has been learning alone in the Floyd Elementary School library since he was removed from class for having hair longer than allowed by a dress code in November, can return to class if he wears his hair in braids that don't reach his collar, The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday.

However, parents Delton Pugh and Elizabeth Taylor said after the meeting the compromise is unacceptable.

"We just spent 30 minutes telling them why we couldn't do that," Pugh said of braiding. Taylor said braiding her son's hair is too time consuming and he can't keep them in for too long before they start to hurt.

The parents said they plan to send their son to school with a ponytail. Officials said the boy will be sent to the library again if his hair does not comply with the district's ruling.
