Train station upgrading schedule board

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Officials with Union Station in New Haven, Conn., said they are doing away with the facility's old-fashioned train schedule board in favor of two LED boards.

Kevin Nursick, a spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Transportation, said the click-clacking Solari board currently in use at the station is old enough that replacement parts are difficult to find and repairs take a great deal of time, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported Friday.

Nursick said the board will be replaced by a pair of larger LED information boards as part of the $5 million improvement project scheduled to begin in the spring and last for one year.

"I know there's some nostalgia involved with the Solari board, but what we're trying to do here is provide the most accurate information," Nursick said.

He said the improvement project also includes the addition of about 400 speakers and 19 variable message boards around the facility to improve the spread of visual and audible information.

Nursick said the specifications for the new boards and sound systems are based on designs from Grand Central Terminal in New York.
