Tourism group drops WTF abbreviation

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- The Wisconsin Tourism Federation said it is changing its name to the Tourism Federation of Wisconsin to drop its common acronym, WTF.

The organization, based in Sun Prairie, Wis., said the switch was necessary to avoid associations between its initials and the popular Internet and text-messaging use of "WTF," an abbreviation for a profane phrase expressing confusion, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

"We didn't want it to detract from our mission," TFW spokeswoman Julia Hertel said.

She said the organization voted to change the name in July but the decision was not made official on the TFW Web site, which still used the URL www.witourismfederation.org, until recently.

Student gets the boot for streaking

BOULDER, Colo., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A University of Colorado student with a penchant for running naked says he will be suspended for the spring semester for streaking at a football game.

Mason Lacy, 19, who was charged with resisting arrest and trespassing for his naked run during halftime of a Sept. 6 game against Colorado State University, said he was informed Tuesday he will not be allowed to take classes at the university in the spring, the Boulder (Colo.) Daily Camera reported.

Lacy also was charged with incidental exposure in 2007 when the then-17-year-old streaked at a high school football game. The charge was later dropped as a result of his young age.

Lacy said he was relieved not to be charged with indecent exposure in the Sept. 6 incident because it could have led to him registering as a sex offender.

"That could have been really bad," he said. "Being a sex offender is a really serious thing."

Woman arrested during topless walk

YORK, S.C., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A 50-year-old South Carolina woman was arrested for allegedly walking around her neighborhood without a top on, authorities said.

Angela Jonas of York, S.C., told deputies arriving on the scene Tuesday that she likes to be nude when she mows her lawn, the York County Sheriff's Office said. A neighbor complained Jonas has walked the neighborhood topless on multiple occasions, the Rock Hill (S.C.) Herald reported.

Deputies said Jonas could not give a clear answer when asked why she was "naked from the waist up" outside.

Jonas was charged with indecent exposure and taken to jail in lieu of $1,000 bond.

American Girl downplays homeless doll

CHICAGO, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A spokeswoman for American Girl says youth bullying, not homelessness, inspired the U.S. doll maker's homeless character.

The unidentified spokeswoman for the product line said while the character Gwen is secretly homeless in the American Girl storyline, her situation is actually more about how girls can be bullies and also how to stand up to bullies, The Chicago Sun-Times said.

American Girl, which is a subsidiary of Mattel, traditionally offers look-alike and historical dolls. The toy brand came under fire with the release of Gwen as New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser questioned the messages behind a homeless doll enduring family problems.

Gwen's problems were highlighted in an American Girl book and film about Chrissa, the 2009 Girl of the Year, the Sun-Times reported.

At least one shopper at the American Girl store in Chicago's Water Tower Place applauded Gwen's story of homelessness.

"It's a great idea for kids to learn there is a different part of society," shopper Barbara Fidler told the Sun-Times.
